  • Fixed-Term

Join The Aviation Think Tank!

Have you ever wondered what tomorrow’s air transport might look like? As the aviation think tank in Germany – consisting of young and ambitious experts from various disciplines – our goal is to provide science-based answers. Located in Taufkirchen near Munich, we offer a modern working environment with open ears and doors. We are always looking for passionate and creative minds to help us push today’s boundaries to new heights.

Become a Doctoral Candidate of the RWTH Aachen University!
As a candidate for obtaining your doctorate degree from the RWTH Aachen University, you will be (co-) supervised by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christian Sattler and his team at the Chair of Solar Fuel Production, in the RWTH Faculty of Engineering.

Shape the future of aviation with us today and join us as:

Our challenges:

  • In search of the most promising technical options to achieve climate neutrality: evaluation of key performance parameters of future aviation fuel pathways
  • Process and system modelling for production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from concentrated sunlight, water and CO2: Solar-thermochemical Sunlight-to-Liquid (StL) fuel technology
  • Holistic comparative evaluation of the StL path with liquid hydrogen, e-fuels and SAF from advanced biomass, including renewable CO2 sourcing via direct air capture (DAC)
  • Evaluation of production potentials, ecological life cycle performance (LCA) and techno-economic criteria (TEA) as well as other performance indicators
  • International research collaboration (Ref: sun-to-liquid-2.eu) and interdisciplinary cooperation with the Strategic Research Areas of Bauhaus Luftfahrt
  • Communication of research results through journal publications, conferences and media channels

We need you because:

  • You have successfully completed your M.Sc. and wish to obtain a PhD
  • You bring scientific creativity in combination with quantitative analytical and programming skills to the team
  • You have knowledge of heat transfer and the basics of renewable energy technologies, and you have proven that you can work your way into new topics
  • Ideally you are already familiar with aspects of solar energy conversion, life-cycle analysis and/or cost analysis
  • You are passionate about giving scientific answers to introducing future renewable energy in aviation
  • You enjoy process modelling of fuel production pathways
  • You are interested in multidisciplinary, target-oriented tasks within joint academic and industry research consortia
  • You are proficient in German and English

What we offer:

  • Attractive salary package according to the public tariff system plus performance-oriented compensation
  • Retirement Pension Plan
  • Professional training (in-house and/or external seminars)
  • Flexible Working Hours
